“THOSE WHO GAVE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE”

Badge of Mourning Wall of Honor Badge of Mourning

The Saint Paul Police Historical Society is creating a Wall Of Honor. The mission of the Wall of Honor Project is to design a memorial that will stand the test of time, honoring the fallen officers in a matter in which they truly deserve. It is extremely important that survivors, family members, friends, fellow officers, and visitors have access to the wall. The chosen location is the entrance of the Saint Paul Police Headquarters which will allow 24/7, 365 access for everyone.

There will be a bronze plaque for each officer who has made the ultimate sacrifice, flanked by wooden panel relief carvings. These carvings were created by Clifford E. Letty (1937-2009) and aptly named “Those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.” Letty is also the artist of the twelve foot relief panel named “Public Safety Memorial,” that hangs in the Saint Paul Police Headquarters and was donated to the Saint Paul Police Historical Society by Saint Paul attorney Gerald E. Frisch.

The design of the Wall of Honor has been more than a year in the making and was conceived by the same core group of individuals who were instrumental in other department projects such as the 1999 Police Department State Capitol Photo Shoot, the Millennium History Book, the Millennium Time Capsule, the Police Federation Memorial Bell, and The Sergeant Bergeron 30 ton Memorial Rock.

The Wall of Honor will be located just inside the front doors of Headquarters (367 Grove St.) on the horizontal wall above the dropped ceiling.

One of the most interesting and unique parts of the memorial design will be the old world Celtic wall mounted solid oak lectern, an oversized “great book” cast in bronze that will rest in an open position atop the lectern. The “book” will house an interactive I-pad providing a history of each of the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This will enhance the personal experiences of all who visit the wall.

Although the current police budget does not allow for this expenditure, the concept has been authorized by Chief Tom Smith. The Saint Paul Police Historical Society has begun a fundraising effort of $20,000. If every member of the police family and extended family makes a generous donation we will be able to honor these officers with this dramatic memorial.

Everyone who wishes to contribute to this endeavor can send their monetary gift to:
